A Sanctuary for Injured Wildlife
In the Turkish province of Sakarya, Kolia Nature Reserve has become a new haven for wildlife with permanent injuries that prevent them from returning to their natural habitats after receiving necessary treatment. In 2022, the Arifiye District Municipality designated this area as a nature reserve, adding walking trails and picnic areas, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to observe animals up close and interact with nature.
A New Home for Wildlife and Birds
The reserve spans 400 dunams (400,000 square meters) and includes ponds formed by floods along the banks of the Sakarya River, becoming home to many species of birds and wildlife. At the veterinary center within the reserve, treatment and care are provided to injured wildlife that cannot be released back into the wild due to permanent disabilities.
Diverse Wildlife in the Reserve
The reserve hosts a variety of wildlife, including an imperial eagle, three falcons, a swan, several storks, five owls, two monkeys, two water turtles, flamingos, squirrels, three parrots, hawks, and rabbits, according to reserve supervisor Ahmet Safi Turk.
The First and Only Reserve in Sakarya
Safi Turk explained that this reserve is the first and only one in Sakarya, hosting 35 species of wildlife and providing various veterinary services and accommodations for them. The veterinary center in the reserve offers medical services to many wild animals and releases those that have recovered back into nature. For animals with permanent disabilities, the reserve management ensures they remain in a suitable environment.
An Ideal Destination for Families
Veterinarian Beril Hojaoglu noted that the reserve houses around 550 wild animals, some of which were brought by teams from the Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks due to severe injuries. She explained that veterinary treatment varies depending on the animal’s condition, emphasizing the efforts made to provide all necessary needs for the animals, including food and medical services.
